Lift trucks vary considerably in their technical makeup, especially IC (internal combustion) engine powered trucks, with the transmission being a defining factor. But what are transmissions, and why do they matter?
Choosing the right transmission for a specific application can be the source of many operational benefits. Hyster offers several transmission options in its range of lift trucks up to 9 tonnes capacity so applications can make the best choice according to their usage needs.
Powershift Transmission Vs Hydrostatic
Powershift or Electronic Transmission. What’s the difference?
Simply explained, a “powershift” transmission transfers power from the engine to the tyres through a torque converter. Meanwhile an electronically controlled transmission simplifies some operator functions.
What type of operation?
For standard, everyday operations, a basic powershift transmission, as featured on the Hyster® H2.0-3.0XT range for example, will give dependable operation and controllability and a lower overall cost of operation.
For more demanding operations, an electronically controlled transmission will help deliver further benefits such as reduced operating costs and improved driver performance. This includes the DuraMatch transmission as featured on the Hyster Fortens range.
How does the transmission impact your operation?

Intense loading and unloading operations, for example, involve frequent forward and backward shuttling duties. When using a basic powershift transmission, the operator relies on the brakes to slow the truck’s travel speed which will wear over time.
As a result some operations experiencing excessive brake and tyre wear may switch to a truck featuring an Auto Deceleration System (ADS). As featured on the DuraMatch transmission, it automatically slows the truck’s travel speed when the accelerator pedal is released, without having to use the footbrake. This contributes to reduced wear for brakes and tyres and helps to enhance productivity.
It is also possible for operators to facilitate smooth direction changes without even using the brake pedal or stopping the truck. A “Controlled Power Reversal” (CPR) feature optimises truck control and can prolong clutch, brake and tyre life by simultaneously managing the engine RPM and activating control valves on the clutch packs. Reducing the wheel-spin and tyre scrubbing contributes to lower costs and improved productivity for many operations.
With a more advanced transmission, the technology can limit the truck’s rollback rate on a ramp when the brake and throttle pedals are released, preventing the truck from running uncontrolled off the ramp.
Make your choice
The choice of truck and transmission will always depend on the application and how the truck is to be used. That is why Hyster provides so much choice to ensure customers get the best product for their application.

Configurations:
Spicer Powershift Transmissions are available 3 configurations:
T (HR) Model
The T arrangement is an integral transmission and converter assembly mounted directly to the engines. As a single compact package, it minimizes external piping abd eliminates a drive shaft.
MT (MHR) Model
The MT or midship mounting is an integral transmission and converter assembly mounted remote from the engine. This assembly allows for installation flexibility while minimizing external piping.
RT (R) Model
The RT model is a remote-mounted transmission with an engine-mounted converter. This allows for flexibility of the transmission installation.
